Rhythmic
Beat vs. Rhythm Students will begin to understand and demonstrate the difference between beat and rhythm. Ta and Ti-Ti These are also known as a quarter notes and eighth notes. Students will recognize that there can be one sound on a beat (ta) or two sounds on a beat (ti-ti). Students will be able to demonstrate this skill with their voice, on an instrument and in reading and writing music. Rest This silent beat is introduced at the end of the first grade year. It is a beat with no sound. Students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of this skill with their voice, on an instrument and in reading and writing music. Instrumental
Chord Bordun This is a simple, beginning accompaniment used with folk songs. The students will play both the tonic and dominant notes of the scale simultaneously in a repetitive pattern. |
Melodic
Sol-Mi This is the first interval taught in a music curriculum. Students will recognize the difference between two specific sounds, one high and one low. They are not neighboring tones-there's a skip of one line or one space on the staff. Students will be able to demonstrate this skill with their voice, on an instrument and in reading and writing music. La At the end of the first grade year students will begin to experience this melodic concept. It is a note higher than Sol. La is a neighboring tone to Sol. Form
AB This concept continues to be refined from the Kindergarten year. ABA Building off the form AB, ABA form introduces that part A can come back Ostinato An ostinato is a short, repeated melodic or rhythmic pattern underneath a melody. Students will be able to perform one ostinato using their voice, instrument or body percussion. |
